The new Nerja-Torrox marina is to cost 33 million euros and construction work is due to start in 2008. The director of EPPA (the Andalusian ports authority), Montserrat Badía, announced on Monday that the basic plans for the marina have been drawn up, along with the environmental study, and these have been handed over by the Junta de Andalucía to the two mayors concerned, Alberto Armijo, of Nerja, and Teodoro Ruiz, of Torrox.
Work will not be able to get under way however until a series of administrative requirements have been complied with. The plans have to be on public display for a month, the environmental impact report will take two months and the assignment of coastal territory on the part of Coasts Authority requires a further two months. The work itself will take two years.
The location chosen for the marina is the west bank of the mouth of the Frontiles stream, on Wilches beach, which lies in the municipality of Torrox just inside the border with Nerja.
The new harbour will have 500 berths for boats of between eight and 25 metres in length, although there will be a section reserved for vessels of up to 35 metres. The marina will take up an area of 23 hectares of which 7.2 will be land and 15.7 water, including a 3,500 square metre platform for associated activities.
Road access to the marina from the N-340 will be provided via a new roundabout and parking for 300 vehicles will be available.
