Re: some info about the club

I know exactly what Dez and Martin can do and have been doing, I havent been to their nights because 1) when they were doing Champagne bar I was playing in Zoo Lounge, 2)Buddha  was on a sunday night which is awkward for me as I get up at 6.30 for work on a monday mornin and 3) I just dont like Anki's Kitchen.

As for putting nights on I did some parties at Siddharta (now Seven) a couple of years ago, with my launch night on the same night Hed Kandi did their first night at Dreamers and we were still rammed , so I'm not worried about competing against big name parties, its all about getting the p.r. and marketing right. I was just making the point that there are just so many similar nights on the go playing tribal, electro and "funky" (hate that bloody term) house.

The club owners are as much to blame as anyone because they wont agree on reasonable deals, so that a promoter wanting to put on a party in the winter can't make it worth his while to do it. No matter how much we love the music, at the end of the day we dont do it for nothing.

I wasnt trying to sound negative about the area, I guess I was just spoiled living and spinning in Glasgow for 15 years, where there is so much going on.

Anyway good luck with Deeper in 2008, I must be the only DJ on the costa who hasnt played for you yet, ha ha.

Re: some info about the club

    Hey Gary,

Wasn't referring to you specifically, mate. However, I've heard quite a few people moan about the fact that they are "bored" because nothing has been going on in the last few months. Yet, so many parties have been taking place after the summer, the majority of them with limited success. My question is why?

You mention marketing and I totally agree with you... it's all about getting the right formula. I think this is substantially easier in the summer than in winter (for obvious reasons), which is exactly the point I'm trying to make. People simply do not show up to events as soon as the summer is finished. I understand why some people prefer to hibernate in winter, which is exactly what I'm doing at the moment :-). What I don't understand are those people desperate for the summer to arrive so they can go to all the big commercial nights, when so many local promoters put on much better nights in winter than what the big boys can do in July/August. I'm not worried at all either about going up against the big names. In fact, we were up against them throughout all of last summer and Deeper still did great.

I'm just trying to get people out of this groove, that if it isn't Hed Kandi or some other big commercial brand, then it's not worth going to.

As far as playing for Deeper is concerned, you'll probably know we spent all of last year showcasing the awesome talent we have here on the Coast. I heard sets at Deeper last year from some of the guys down here that totally blew me away. We'll continue working with local talent this year, so you'll be more than welcome to join us. Send us an e-mail with your contact details at info@deeper.es and I'll get in touch.

Would love to hear other people's opinion on all of this.

And apologies to FXS for hijacking this thread and turning it into a discussion on winter clubbing. :-)

    Philippe Michel

Re: some info about the club

I think that during the winter months maybe the events need to be at the more popular venues even more than they do in the Summer. For example, if I hear that an event is on at Seven or News Cafe I am likely to give it a try because it will have some traffic via walk in trade as well as the traffic delivered by your promotions efforts in contrast to an event at a lesser known venue that is less likely to attract walk in trade. I don't want to risk spending my Friday or Saturday night in an empty place, especially one miles up the road.

But then again, I am just a customer, and not a promoter so what are my thoughts really worth? Maybe nothing !

One thing I do have to say is that no matter what event I have been to in Spain, UK and all over Europe - When I go to the USA I see that they really do it so much better than us! They seem to be able to mix the blend of dance floor action and relaxed table drinking ( where the money is!) a lot better than us Europeans.

I was in Amika in London on Friday and was disappointed that it was the same type of music and vibe in each room, with people sitting down at tables with bottles of Vodka etc listening to what was at times, quite hard house music, whilst groups of 'clubbers' were jumping around to the same music in the room with the dance floor. But they get great PR when the likes of Rihanna and P Diddy go there spraying Cristal and it gets in the papers!.

I do think it can be a layout issue with some of the venues in Marbella which prevents a night really having the right vibe. I think Pangaea in Puerto Banus had the right mix when it was open, but on the other hand I don't believe the new indoor section at Nikki Beach really cuts it......

I agree that certain places do make it hard for promoters to come in and make it work, and that Sintillate and Hed Kandi maybe do have a lot of the so called 'Premium' venues sewn up in the summer. However, I think it's about the experience that you create for the guest that is important. For example, Pangaea and Amika in London are both clubs that I go to, and I have had to almost cut off my right arm to gain access to in the past, but neither of these clubs really have anything that the likes of Icon in Marbella doesn't already have. They are both basement clubs with very little space.

It's unfortunate that it seems to be the clubs that employ 'exclusive' guest policies that have more success than venues that are more 'inclusive' but that seems to be the way it goes. But then again, FTV didn't exactly set the world alight in Marbella in terms of numbers last summer so maybe it's more of a lottery out here in the Wild Wild West that is the Costa Del Sol !

Enjoying this thread, hope it continues!

Re: some info about the club

To be fair its not so much I dont like Anki's , its more I have an issue with Mario Zarate, but thats a whole other story. Yeah Mint is a nice club, I remember playing it a few times a few years back when it was 34 Zero and they still had the poles up from it's previous incarnation (and it wasn't a fire station, lol), always thought the terrace was the best part of the club, dont know if they have changed the layout since back then.

I think that club has had about 5 or 6 different names in the almost 6 years I have been here, I think noone has been able to make it work so far, all down to the location I think, especially in the summer, when most people dont want to leave Banus, but thats been discussed at length before. Hopefully the new owners can make a success of it, because it will only add to the scene to have another place to frequent.

DC, Hows the show going on Hot FM, havent had a chance to check it yet, usually gettin organised for my own little show, good luck with it anyway. :)

Re: some info about the club

Fair enough mate, yes i know as well it has changed names probably twice a year in the last couple of years which isnt a good sign, heard some typical Costa del Sol style stories about non payments along the way too, but i agree if they can get it working regularly would be good. Hot FM is good mate got more enthusiasm and feedback off the guys at the top after 1 week than i did in 18 months at Global :) U guys been going how many years on SS now? 4-5ish? Cant fault that dedication mate ;)
