    Re: Broadband Packages

I know it will surprise most people, but I have never had any trouble with my Telefonica Broadband service or ADSL as they call it. I pay for a 3MB download speed service and it is always there or thereabouts, compared to some companies that will offer you 20MB but when you have it you are lucky to get upwards of 5MB. Off the top of my head its about 40 euros a month for the line and the ADSL, plus IVA of course. They offer a reasonable technical service also, even for me and I live inland which always seems to cause problems for repair people for some strange reason(maybe they need the smell of the sea to work properly, lol) .I remember Wanadoo and Ya.com both used to do good deals, not sure if Wanadoo is now under the Orange banner. I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions about this subject.

    Re: Broadband Packages

we have telefonica at the moment and got to say we have never had a problem, but moving house always enspires you to look for a better deal, just looked on telefonica website and its 40 euros plus 15 euros a month for the line rental which is a bit over the top when all i really need it for is broadband.

Orange and vodafone do deals but cant seem to find anything on the net.

you should be able to get the Orange deal in the Phone Warehouse shops, I know I've seen them advertised in their brochures.

    Re: Broadband Packages

    Not really.

If you want reliability, for most of us that is the most important, then you cant really look any further.

Are they not doing any cheaper packages now then? 3mb is the starter package? I thought there would be more alternatives than that. i.e pacakes with limits etc.

40 bucks is decent enough value i think. 15 a phone isnt bad seeing as you get free phone calls for the whole of Spain included in this and your not really 'anybody' till you have your own home phone are ya?

    Re: Broadband Packages

I currently use a Vodafone USB modem so you dont need a phoneline. But I am not that impressed.

I have recently heard of this company... http://www.jazztel.com/microsites/abril1807_jazztel.htm

They offer a 20mb line and it runs off a Telefonica line.

I am thinking of switching over to them... but before I do it would be good to get some feedback from anyone who have or are using this company.

Your comments would be very helpful.

I booked my ADSL and Phone Line with Telefonica over a week ago and I haven't yet had a call regarding an installation date. Has anyone else experienced long lead times when waiting for them to come and install a line?.

    Re: Broadband Packages

My experience is that other providers (Jazztel, Ya.com, Orange) have had split success in penetrating the market. According to the testimonies I've heard, service has been so and so and the infamous 20MB lines never deliver what they promise. Some of these companies may now have a proper network as opposed to renting the lines from Telefonica, but I would guess that in the Marbella / Nueva Andalucia area these providers still rely on Telefonica.

I've been with Telefonica the last 8 years and that has worked out just fine. No major outages, except during the first year of service, and support has been OK. The service is pretty expensive for what you get, but improvements are on their way. I live in the upper reaches of Nueva Andalucia, so I'm still stuck with the not so decent 1MB service, but if you are closer to the N340 road, 10MB should now be available and for just a few Euros more - 44 I think, whereas I pay 40. You have to pay a monthly rent of the line, around 15 Euros I think, and IVA (VAT) on top. In my case it amounts to roughly 65 Euros a month.

Telefonica have been known to show little interest in expanding their lines inland, so if their service is unavailable in your area - and believe me, you don't need to be very far off the N340 to not qualify - check if there are any companies in your area that do wi-fi internet solutions. Yes, with pretty powerful antennas with a range of up to 30 km, you can easily get connected with decent speed, and it will not cost you much more that Telefonica. Some of these providers also have short-term solutions, so if you're here only for a few weeks at a time, you should basically only pay for that period. Depending on how far you are from their antennas, you can get connected either by attaching a signal booster to your computer (usb port) or if you are further away, a better solution would probably to install a small antenna.

    Re: Broadband Packages

I work from home and the internet is my business so I myself have a 10MB "professional" line with telefonica (€150 per month) and have honestly never had any serious problems with it. However I live right in the centre of Marbella and the exchange is just around the corner.

There is a little known (positive) thing about telefonica adsl though, you can pay an extra €10 per month for a support package and its a guarantee that if you have a problem, it will be resolved within 6 hours. A couple of times I have screwed things up on my firewall and lost my connection and have called them up and within an hour there has been a telefonica guy at my door, so I have been impressed with that.

Do not touch YA! They are awful!. Awful support and basically have no idea about anything.

I also have a 3G Vodafone Linksys router in case telefonica goes down but have not really had to use it in that situation yet. The linksys router basically takes in a mobile vodafone card with an extra sim that I have and I can actually take the router anywhere I want and set up my own little wireless network. Brilliant when I go to my in laws house in the country where they dont have internet!

If you want to talk to someone that knows loads about ADSL, call Joey on Tel: +34 646 353 935.

He can give you the best advice on the range of options available and how to get the most out of your router.
