    Internet problems

I am experiencing problems with my wireless internet connection intermittently dropping out. Its been happening for a couple of days. The problem clears when I reboot the modem but starts again after a short period.  I have called Telefonica Technical Support on 1004 but they cannot assist saying the line is OK. When it goes down the WLAN and LAN lights go steady. The ALM light is flashing red coninuously. Anyone got any ideas what the problem might be?

    Looking forward to early replies!

    Regards len

    Re: Internet problems

    Hi Len,

You could try to check your power management settings (winxp) - start - control panel - system - hardware tab - device manager - under network adapters click propeties for the wireless adapter  - go to power management and uncheck the box that allows the computer to turn off the device. That may be causing it, otherwise what model router is it that you have?

(It could be a problem with the telephone line, if it is flashing red it is looking for the connection, Then again it could be a fault with the router.)

    regards,

    Noches

    Re: Internet problems

    Hi Len,

First of all are you using the wireless modem that Telefonica supplied you with? If so is there plenty of ventalation around it?

i.e   Is it getting hot. If so I can't remember with the one i had if the air vents from under the bottom of the unit or the side, but if it vents from the bottom try putting some find of spacers under the modem so that the hot air can flow out of the unit. Secondly you could do what I did, and get yourself a much better modem, I use the Belkin wireless modem running 24/7 using three computers without any problems, and very easy to setup.

    Re: Internet problems

    Hi Len,

I have the same problem and as I rely on the internet in my job it can be very annoying. Telefonica told me the same thing... that the line was ok.

I have 2 computers running through my Telefonica router... a wireless PC laptop and a Mac that is connected via a network cable. Internet connection on both computers just drop for no reason for 2 or more hours, sometimes longer.

What I do now is disconnect all cables from the router over night and the connection seems to last all day the next day... just getting slightly slower by the evening. So maybe this is worth a try for you.

I was also losing connection during the recent storms we were having, but not sure if the storms were the reason.

Anyway, I hope this might help.

    Regards
    Paul

    Re: Internet problems

    Hello all,

Another (common) problem that could cause this is the electricity itself.  Although Spain has made some incredible progress in the past decades, the electrical infrastructure still needs a lot of work.

All electronic equipment wants a nice constant stream of electricity, not the 'wavy, spiky' stream that gets sent into our homes.  For any PC/Mac owner, I cannot recommend strongly enough the use of a UPS (they are called SAIs here in Spain).  This is an "Uninterruptable Power Supply" and has two core purposes:

     1. To work as a battery back-up.  The better versions can be connected to your computer, and you can configure them so that if the power is out for more than 10 minutes, they will automatically shut down your computer (properly) for you, and even start back up when the power comes back online.

    2. To filter and evenly distribute the electricity going to the electronic equipment that is plugged into it.

If you purchased one of these UPSs for use with your computer, you could then also plug your router into it.   A decent UPS can be purchased in most electronic stores but I know that Alcampo (in La Canada) sells them for around the 60 EUR mark.  A sound investment to protect your PC and possibly fix your router’s hiccups.

    Re: Internet problems

Yeah I second notthat´s opinion. Get rid of the cheap chinese sh@# router from Telefonica and get a decent Linksys or Cisco router, it should take care of your problem.

    Re: Internet problems

One last tiny point about those UPS (and why they are so useful) - is if you get a decent one (one that has a USB or serial connection on it, ask at the shop to be sure), then you can actually connect it to your computer, and configure it so that if your power goes off and stays off for say, 10 minutes, that it can automatically (and safely) shut down your PC for you.  These can save countless hours of work and keep your computers (especially your hard disks which are sensitive to power spikes / cuts) running smoothly for years to come!

    Re: Internet problems

Get an APC UPS, do not skimp on it.

Mine cost €800 and powers my whole home office for 3 hours and I have the following stuff plugged into it...

1 x Dell 2900 rackmount server (very power hungry)
1 x Crappy Telefonica router (which works perfectly BTW)
1 x Linksys Vodafone 3G Router (in case telefonica goes down)
    1 x Desktop PC with a 650 watt PSU
4 x 19 inch Flatscreen Monitors (Hey i really do need 4 screens!)
    1x A3 printer
1 x HP Multifunction fax printer
    1 x desk light.

This is quite a bit of gear and the APC handles it really well.

Its great when the power goes off in Marbella because I will be sitting in my office and everything stays on whilst my wife is running around for a torch in the rest of the house!!!

    Big Smile

Power cuts dont happen "that" often in Marbella but when they do it can be frustrating.

Has anyone else had any problems with Canguro Net coming pre-installed with Telfonica routers?, it's driving me absolutely mad, creating errors on every page and making my internet extrmemely slow as it checks every page for content at the same time as my Kaspersky Internet Security does the same thing!

    Hi Christian,

get rid of that router, and get a Belkin or Linksys router. this should sort out your problems.
