Search for missing Irish teenager, Amy Fitzpatrick, spreads to Marbella

The 15 year old vanished between Calypso and Riviera del Sol in Mijas Costa on January 1st

Police, Guardia Civil, fire brigade, Red Cross and Civil Protection are combing the area

Mystery still surrounds the whereabouts of missing 15 year old Amy Fitzpatrick. It’s well over a week now since the Irish teenager, resident in Mijas for the last five years, disappeared after leaving her friend’s house on January 1st to take the short cut home between Calypso and Riviera del Sol. As time goes on the idea that Amy has run away seems less and less likely. She had left home without warning as many as five times in the past but always went to her friend Ashley’s house and returned after a couple of days. This time when she disappeared Amy was carrying no money and had left her mobile telephone at home. “I think something terrible has happened to her”, said Ashley, who admitted earlier this week that Amy had told her that a man had asked her on several occasions to get into his car while she was on her way home.

    Search continues

The Guardia Civil began their search for the missing girl after her disappearance was reported by her mother, Audrey Fitzpatrick, on January 3rd. After combing the Riviera del Sol area the search was extended on Wednesday to cover a six kilometre radius with some 250 professionals, from the Guardia Civil, the Local Police, the Civil Protection organisation, the fire brigade and the Red Cross, taking part, along with sniffer dogs and two helicopters. In the end the volunteers who had turned up at the football ground in La Cala did not take part in the search, and the work was limited to the experts from the different institutions.

After around five hours combing the area the searchers returned to the football ground. “Fortunately or unfortunately, we haven’t found anything. Tomorrow - Thursday - we’ll try again”, said one of the Local Police officers. In fact on Thursday morning the search resumed, again with more than 200 participants from all over the province. This time they concentrated on the area to the west of Riviera del Sol, including the Artola dunes, Cabopino and Elviria in the municipality of Marbella. At the time of going to press no relevant finds had been reported.

This week’s searches have inevitably brought back memories of the search for 19 year old Rocío Wanninkhof, also in Mijas Costa, in 1999. In fact the dead girl’s father, Guillermo Wanninkhof, on holiday this week in Mijas, went to La Cala football ground on Wednesday to offer his support to Amy’s family.

Meanwhile Amy’s father, Christopher Fitzpatrick, issued a statement from his home in Dublin asking on one hand for his daughter to call, and appealing, on the other, for anyone who may be holding her to set her free.

Response to appeals for cooperation from the general public has been good, with the Guardia Civil receiving around 20 calls a day, the majority from local people who have found clothes or other personal items in the street which they think may belong to the missing teenager. All the calls received are being followed up but none as yet has provided any reliable evidence.

Similarly detectives have been making contact with Amy’s friends and acquaintances as well as residents in the neighbourhood. However the reserved nature of the foreign community in the area, combined with the fact that many expatriates were away over the Christmas and New Year period, has not helped the investigation. Sources maintain that all lines of enquiry are still open and no hypothesis has been ruled out. Timeline

31st December: Amy Fitzpatrick went to her friend Ashley Rubio’s house to help her look after her younger brother for New Year’s Eve.

1st January: The two friends went to Fuengirola in the morning, had lunch at home and went to El Zoco in Calahonda in the evening. They returned home at 21.45. Fifteen minutes later Amy left the Rubios’ house in Calypso. As usual she was going to take a short cut to Riviera del Sol, a little used, unlit path. She was wearing black trousers and black boots that belonged to her friend. She had no money and wasn’t carrying her mobile telephone.

2nd Jan: Her mother and stepfather waited. It wasn’t the first time that she had left home without warning.

3rd Jan: Amy’s mother, Audrey Fitzpatrick, and her partner report her disappearance. The search starts.

4th Jan: Thirty officers from the Guardia Civil, Civil Protection and Local Police comb the area between Calypso and Riviera del Sol in Mijas Costa, with the help of a helicopter and sniffer dogs.

5th Jan: The search is extended to the upper area of Riviera del Sol, near the motorway. The family appeal for information about the teenager’s whereabouts. Photos of Amy are distributed.

6th Jan: The Guardia Civil resume their search around Amy’s home and into the Sierra de Mijas.

7th Jan: The search continues. Amy’s father, Christopher Fitzpatrick, who lives in Dublin appeals for help to find his daughter. The hypothesis that she ran away loses strength.

8th Jan. The Guardia Civil study CCTV tapes from neighbouring estates.

9th Jan. Some 200 police and fire officers, rescue experts and members of Protección Civil and the Red Cross comb a six kilometre radius. The family give a second press conference.

10th Jan. The search is extended into the municipality of Marbella.

    Regards

Notthat.  Great work!  The more people that get to know about this young girl the better.  So far, only the Irish media have picked up on this story with none of the UK newspapers running it at all.  Great shame, when a lot of the Brits in Riviera and Calahonda area still buy the English papers everyday.

On day 17 - things seem to have gone very quiet.  Any news on where the Police intend to search next?

Re: Search for missing Irish teenager, Amy Fitzpatrick, spreads to Marbella

The Independent Guardia Civil Association (ASIGC) says that all leads and possible explanations for the disappearance are being considered and that the recent movements of several British sex offenders known to live on the Costa del Sol are being reviewed.
The family is distributing missing-person posters with photographs of Amy and has asked that anyone with any information please contact the authorities on 062 or the family on 686 044 181.

    Regards

Friday 18th Jan 2008 -  This was reported in the Belfast Telegraph & Irish times this morning.  Shame there's not been anything on the British news considering there are so many ex-pats here.  Hope they find her safe and well, but this kind of thing goes to show we are not living in a safe world, even here on the Costa and more publicity locally and on British channels/papers about this and other similar cases is required.  Personally, I think people here think it's safe for kids and teenagers to have more freedom, but really it's as bad as anywhere else and most of us Brits are living under a false sense of security as far as our kids safety is concerned.

Spanish Police following definite line of enquiry in Amy Fitzpatrick investigation

The Spanish authorities are following a definite line of enquiry in their search for missing teenager Amy Fitzpatrick. The 15 year old Dublin girl has been missing on the Costa del Sol since the 1st of January.

This morning's Irish Times has reported that officers investigating the case are now searching for a white car belonging to a neighbour of the girl's family.  The owner was interviewed by police this week, and he was unable to tell the authorities where the vehicle was, and had not reported it missing because he didn't want to draw attention to himself.

It is believed that Amy often went to the man's house when she had rows at home.  Police are now trying to establish a link between the missing car and Amy's disappearance.

    Filed under:

Irish Girl Amy Fitzpatrick disappeared on the evening of New Year’s Day 1st January 2008 at approximately 10pm when she left her friends house in the tourist resort of Riviera Del Sol on the Costa del Sol to take the 10 minute walk to her house.

Amy was 15 at the time of her disappearance; she has black hair, blue eyes and has a pale complexion. She is 1.65m tall and was wearing dark coloured crushed velvet tracksuit bottoms and a black T-shirt with the word “DIESEL” in various different colours when she was last seen. She had no money, phone or passport as she was still on her Mum’s passport. She was wearing her friend’s clothes and carrying a bag of her own dirty clothes. She turned 16 on the 7th February 2008. On the night Amy disappeared she was babysitting in her friend Ashley’s home. Ashley watched Amy walk away form her door and that was the last time Amy was seen.

Amy is originally from Clare Hall on Dublin’s North side and she moved to The Costa del sol with her Mum Audrey, her brother Dean and Audrey’s partner Dave 4 years ago.  Amy had been off school for over a year after been bullied, and had confided in friends that she felt unhappy in Spain and yearned for a return to Ireland. Her computer and phone have been checked thoroughly and nothing was found to suggest she has left voluntarily with someone. Amy has numerous sites on social networking sites, e.g. bebo, my space, face book and MSN and none of them have been touched since she went missing.

Re: Search for missing Irish teenager, Amy Fitzpatrick, spreads to Marbella

    DESAPARECIDA - AMY FITZPATRICK
